WorldPay, one of the leaders in payment processing systems, has reported a staggering 226% year-on-year growth in contactless payments in the UK.
Their data suggested that 17% of Londoners has used contactless payments in 2013, compared to the lowest performing City of Bristol at only 4%.
WorldPay said that almost a quarter of all debit and credit cards in the UK now support contactless payments with over 38 million in use.
The impatience of shoppers is a clear factor in the increase, with over a third of UK shoppers saying they get irritated by the length of time it can take to pay for goods in stores.
A spokesman for WorldPay said “today’s shoppers demand speedy service, and will walk away if they don’t get it.”
